本文重點
  • A garden journal turns each season into lessons for the next.
  • Sketch a simple map of beds and pots.
  • Log sowing, planting and harvest dates as they happen.
  • Note weather, pests and small wins in a few words.
  • Review at season’s end and plan what to grow next.

To keep a garden journal in your planner, sketch your beds, log sowing and planting dates, jot weather and harvest notes and review at the end of each season. A few lines a week turn guesswork into your own gardening know-how.

Sketch a simple map

On a notes page, draw your beds, borders or balcony pots. It does not need to be neat. Label each space with what grows there. Next year, the map helps you rotate crops, fill gaps and remember where the bulbs went.

Log dates as they happen

Each time you sow, plant out or prune, write the date and the variety. Add the first flower or first harvest when it arrives. These dates become a personal calendar far more useful than general advice, because they reflect your climate and your garden.

Note weather and small wins

A late frost, a heatwave, a week of rain, a visit from aphids or bees. Short notes explain why a crop thrived or struggled. Include the small joys too: the first tomato, a rose that finally bloomed. Gardening is as much about pleasure as productivity. For more outdoor planning, see Take Your Planner Outdoors.

Keep a wish list

Reserve a page for plants you admire in other gardens, seed ideas and tools you might need. When the next season comes, you will have a ready list instead of a blank mind at the garden center.

Review at the end of the season

When the season winds down, read through your notes. What would you grow again? What should move? What was more trouble than it was worth? Write three lessons and one new idea. That page becomes the first step of next year’s plan.
